Contacting families in another country: what scouts should know
Go2Pro connects players and scouts across borders. That is the point of the platform. It also means your first message may land in a family that speaks another language, lives six hours ahead and has never heard of your club. Here is how to do it well.
Write in their language if you can
A short message in the family’s language, even an imperfect one, is read first. If you cannot, write in simple English. Short sentences. No football slang. Say what you mean. The parent may be translating your message on a phone at the kitchen table.
Say who you are, in a way they can check
Your verified status and your professional profile are visible to the family. Help them anyway. Name your club or organisation, your role and the city you work in. A parent who can look you up in thirty seconds is far more likely to reply.
Explain what you actually want
“I would like to follow this player over the season” is a different message from “We are inviting players to a trial in June.” Say which one it is. If there is a cost for the family, say so in the first message. Families abroad are used to invitations that turn out to be expensive camps. Clear is kind.
Respect the rules on minors
For players under 18 you contact the linked parent only, inside the app. You do not ask for the player’s phone number or social accounts. You do not send a message through a teammate. If a family wants to move to a call, they will propose it.
Mind the clock and the calendar
Check the time zone before you expect a quick reply. School calendars, exam periods and religious holidays differ from country to country. A silence of a week is not a no.
Be honest about distance
A family will ask themselves the real questions. Would the player have to move? Who would look after them? What happens at school? If your proposal involves relocation, say so early and say what support exists. If it does not, say that too. A parent who hears “nothing changes for now, I just want to watch him play” relaxes.
What not to do
Do not promise contracts, agents or professional careers in a first message. Do not ask for documents. Do not pressure a family for an answer by a date. These are the habits that got scouting a bad name, and Go2Pro verification exists to keep them out.
After the first reply
Answer within a day or two. Keep it short. If the fit is not there, say so politely and close the conversation. Families remember professionals who behaved well, and they talk to each other.
